Redondo Beach Submarine Canyon at Veteran's Park
November 1925 Captain Hans C. Monstad proposed a peir to provide landings for all fishing boats and please crafts operating in Redondo Beach. On November 30, 1925 the City Council approved a 20 year franchise allowing Captain Monstad to construct a landing and fishing wharf at his own expense. Construction of the 300’ long Monstad Pier commenced the next week. Captain Monstad extended his pier 100 additional feet in 1937 and 50 feet in width in 1938. The Monstad Pier became a boarding point for water taxis and fishing vessels.
dive Site description
- Layout: west facing beach with the pier and the entrance to the marina on the north end and the jetty to the south. The lip of the canyon is at roughly 35 feet. From there it's pretty steep down to about 80 ft where the slope slows down quite a bit.
- Present Conditions: WetSand.com reports 2 ft. surf approaching perpendicular to the beach.
- Points of Interest: There's a monument (cinder block reef) at about 65 feet just south of the main stairs that run past the bathrooms.
- Unusual hazards: look out for fishing line by the pier. Sand can get pretty soft in the shorebreak
- Facilities: Bathrooms close around 10pm. Showers are 24 hour.
- Area's off limits: under the pier is off limits unless your doing a clean up dive.
- Map: Show dive guide. if it's getting deeper your going west ( away from the shore) if it's geting shallow your going East (towards shore) if the hill is on your right your going north.
Your Role
- Where you will be: Leading the dive in front and slightly above.
- What you will be doing: Looking for critters to point out
- How to identify you: Gray fins and a shorty over my 7mm.
- How to get your attention: Flash me, tap me, or pull my fin.
Entry and Exit Procedures
- Keep your reg in your mouth so you don't drown.
- Turn your light on before entering the water so we can find your body.
- Hold your mask on your head as you duck under the waves so you don't have to buy a new one.
- Crawl out if you have to!
Dive Procedures
- Recommended Course to follow: Head west until 65 then south for about 20 yards to look for the monument. If then we will head down to about 80 Head north till we run low on air 1000psi and then out of the canyon and south back to the stairs and the east out of the water.
- Recommended Max Depth/time: 100 ft
- Ways to avoid common problems: Lots of silt below 80 feet. Frog kick.
- Suggested Air Reserve:Out of the canyon at around 900 psi
- Reasons behind recommendations: better longer dive.
- Reminder: Make a safety stop: Play with the rays in the shallows
Emergency Procedures
- Buddy Separation: look for one minute (not two) proceed to the lip of the canyon and then make a safe ascent.
- Low on Air: Safe ascent, Share Air, CESA
- Call 911
- Call DAN ( number on back plate )
Signal Review
Shine light on hand for signals. Big OK with light. Side to side for quick response and fast for emergency.
